About Isfahan

Isfahan, in Iran, is the capital of Isfahan Province and of its county and district. It lies at the crossing of Iran's two principal routes, north–south and east–west, 440 kilometers (270 miles) south of Tehran, and it is the third-most populous city in the country after Tehran and Mashhad. Human habitation in the region goes back to the Paleolithic period. Under Median rule it became a regional center, helped by the Zayandehrud River. Muslim Arabs captured the city in 642 CE. It thrived from the 9th to the 18th century, and under the Safavid Empire and Abbas the Great it became Iran's capital for the second time.

The city's fame rests on Persian–Muslim architecture: tiled mosques with minarets, palaces, covered bridges and grand boulevards. Naqsh-e Jahan Square ranks among the world's largest city squares and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surviving foundations of some Sassanid-era bridges hint at ambitious urban planning by the Sasanian kings, and the city walls are thought to date from the tenth century. Toghril Beg made Isfahan his capital in the mid-11th century, and the city expanded in size and splendor under Malik-Shah I. Isfahan had a golden age under Abbas the Great, who relocated his capital there from Qazvin.
