About Baku

Baku is Azerbaijan's capital and largest city, and no other city on the Caspian Sea or in the Caucasus is bigger. It lies 28 meters (92 ft) below sea level, lower than any other national capital, and it is the largest city lying below sea level anywhere. The city sits on the Absheron Peninsula's southern shore, around the Bay of Baku, and its urban area is estimated to hold over two million people; about 25% of the country's inhabitants live in the metropolitan area. The city has twelve administrative raions and 48 townships, and it is the country's scientific, cultural and industrial center.

Baku's architecture is varied, from the Old City core and modern buildings to the wide layout of the port. Many landmarks date from the early 20th century, when elements of European styles were blended into an eclectic style. UNESCO designated the Old City, home to the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a World Heritage Site in 2000; most of its walls and towers survived, strengthened following Russia's 1806 conquest. Late modern and postmodern buildings started appearing in the early 2000s, and all-glass buildings have gone up around the city, including Flame Towers, the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, and Baku Crystal Hall.
