About Yerevan
Yerevan is Armenia's capital and its largest city, and it counts among the oldest cities in the world where people have lived without a break. It stands on the banks of the Hrazdan, northeast of the Ararat Plain, in Armenia's central-west, and acts as the country's administrative, cultural and industrial center. Yerevan has served as the country's capital since 1918, the fourteenth capital in Armenian history. It belongs to no province and carries the special administrative status of a capital. Its founding is traced to Erebuni, a fortress that King Argishti I of Urartu built in 782 BC.
Central Yerevan owes much of its shape to a plan by the architect Alexander Tamanian, later revised by Jim Torosyan, which set the Republic Square, the opera house and the Cascade in place. Its average elevation is 990 m (3,248.03 ft), and mountains surround its upper part on three sides while the Hrazdan canyon lies below; the Yerevan TV Tower is its tallest structure. A redevelopment push begun in 2000 has replaced many older buildings with high-rises, which some residents have criticized. Since then the city has gained the Saint Gregory Cathedral, a new City Council building, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts and Northern Avenue.
