About the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan
The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is a monumental mosque and madrasa in Cairo, Egypt, in the city's historic district, on Salah al-Din Square. It dates to the Bahri Mamluk period, with construction running from 1356 to 1363 CE, and Sultan an-Nasir Hasan commissioned it. In its day it was seen as remarkable for its sheer size and its innovative architectural elements.
Construction coincided with the Black Plague, which hit Cairo again and again from the middle of the 14th century. Al-Maqrizi mentions a cost of 30,000 dirham every day, and the full bill passed one million dinars, the highest cost of any mosque in medieval Cairo. The project drew craftsmen from across the Mamluk empire, including the distant provinces of Anatolia, and limestone from the Pyramids of Giza is believed to have been quarried for it.
It measures about 150 meters in length, 68 meters in width and 36 meters in height. Vertical rows of eight windows mark its two long facades, which helps emphasize the height, and a heavy muqarnas cornice (stalactite-like carving) crowns the tops of the facades, though not around the whole building. Its sturdy build and position near the Citadel meant it was used more than once as a fortified position or a base for attacks on the Citadel.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

- Two slim minarets
- Two slender minarets rise above the dome and the main block. Print friendly adapts thin parts to the print scale, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm with slow printing help the tall tips hold up.
- Roof openings and small domes
- The flat roof has deep square openings and a dome. A larger print size or Full detail keeps these details instead of simplifying them.
- One piece with the ground
- The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
