About Cairo

Cairo is both the capital and the biggest city of Egypt and of the Cairo Governorate, with more than 9.8 million people living in the city itself. Greater Cairo has over 22 million residents, and the city belongs to Africa's biggest urban agglomeration, which is likewise the biggest in the Arab world and in the Middle East. It lies near the Nile Delta, and its predecessor city was Fustat. Cairo was founded in 969 and served as the Fatimid Caliphate's capital from 973. It is home to Al-Azhar University, the oldest university in Egypt. Africa's oldest metro system is the Cairo Metro, which opened in 1987.

Cairo is called the city of a thousand minarets because of its many Islamic buildings, and its historic center became a World Heritage Site in 1979. Near the start of the 4th century the Romans put up a large fortress on the Nile's east bank, built by Diocletian. Among Cairo's oldest surviving churches, Saint Barbara and Saints Sergius and Bacchus stand inside its walls in Old Cairo. After the Muslim conquest, Amr ibn al-As founded Fustat beside the fortress in 641 or early 642, and also a mosque there; it is the oldest in Egypt and Africa, though its current structure dates from later expansions.
