About Via 57 West

Via 57 West, which carries the stylized marketing name VIΛ 57WEST, is a residential building on West 57th Street (number 625) between 11th and 12th Avenues in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen. The Danish firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) designed it as a pyramid-shaped tower block, or "tetrahedron", that rises 467 feet (142 m) and has 35 stories.

The building has 709 units and covers 861,000 sq ft (80,000 m2) of floor area. Seen from Manhattan, it resembles a distorted pyramid whose steeply sloped facade rises toward the northeast. Angular balconies surround an integrated green plaza that links the block to Hudson River Park and the waterfront, and the balconies on the northern facade are tilted at 45 degrees. BIG labeled the building a "courtscraper".

This was the first New York project by Ingels. Durst Fetner Residential commissioned BIG in spring 2009, asking for a new residential typology for Manhattan. The New York Times reported that the name was chosen because the West Side Highway, heading south, slopes down at the site, so that drivers entering the city arrive "via 57th". The building won the 2016 Emporis Best Skyscraper design award, the 2016 CTBUH award for Best Tall Building Americas, the 2016 International Highrise Award, and an AIA Housing Award in 2017.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 39 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 49 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 62 mm 1:2,344

Sloped faces and sharp apex
The steep sloped faces and the pointed top need clean layers. Use a layer height of 0.12-0.16 mm, and a larger print size keeps the angled balconies visible.
Open courtyard
The big opening in the middle of the building is a long overhang. Print slowly and use a larger print or Full detail to keep its edges clear.
One piece with the ground
Via 57 West is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Via 57 West takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a Via 57 West STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Via 57 West grows with the print: about 39 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
