About 1221 Avenue of the Americas

1221 Avenue of the Americas is a skyscraper in the international style in New York City. Its address is 1221 Sixth Avenue, also called the Avenue of the Americas, and it stands in Midtown Manhattan. It has 51 floors and a seven-story base, with a simple cuboid shape. The facade carries no decoration: red granite piers alternate with stripes of glass, a pattern that underlines the tower's verticality. The building sits 35 m (115 feet) back from Sixth Avenue, and it once went by the name McGraw-Hill Building as well.

The tower is one of the "XYZ Buildings", which belong to the later expansion of Rockefeller Center in the 1960s and 1970s. Wallace Harrison, the Rockefeller family's architect at Harrison & Abramovitz, first drew up plans for them in 1963. The letters correspond to height, and 1221 Avenue of the Americas is the "Y" building: the second tower completed, in 1973, and second in height at 205 m (674 ft) with 51 stories. McGraw Hill Financial used it as its headquarters from 1972 to 2015, and in 2009 it received a LEED green-building certification.

A sunken courtyard formerly held Sun Triangle, an abstract steel sculpture by Athelstan Spilhaus that stood 15 m (49 feet) tall, positioned so that the Sun lines up with its sides on the solstices and equinoxes. The lobby combines red marble and dark red terrazzo with aphorisms from Plato and from John F. Kennedy. In the film The Devil Wears Prada (2006), the building's exterior and lobby stood in for Elias-Clarke's headquarters.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Fine vertical stripes
The walls are covered in thin vertical lines. A larger print size and a layer height of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the stripes crisp, while Print friendly softens the very finest ones.
A tall, plain slab
The tower is a tall flat-topped block packed in among other tall buildings. Printing slowly keeps its long straight walls clean, and Full detail suits a larger print.
One piece with the ground
1221 Avenue of the Americas is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. 1221 Avenue of the Americas takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
