About 1740 Broadway

1740 Broadway, once known as the Mutual of New York Building or MONY Building, is a 26-story tower in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It stands between 55th and 56th Streets, on Broadway's east side, and the Park Central Hotel sits on the same block. Mutual of New York put it up in 1950 as its corporate headquarters, with Shreve, Lamb and Harmon as architects, and a complete renovation followed in 2007.

The building's best-known feature was once a sign at the roofline for Mutual of New York, its first owner. The earliest sign spelled out the full company name, with the initial letter of each word (MONY) in red neon twice the size of the others. It inspired the 1968 hit "Mony Mony" by Tommy James and the Shondells and appears as a motif in Midnight Cowboy. In December 2007 Vornado took it down and put up "1740" in its place, each numeral 2.6 meters (8+1⁄2 feet) tall in Futura type, lit by LEDs at night.

On the roof sits the Weather Star, a 46 m (150-foot) tower of lights capped by a star-shaped weather beacon, built by Artkraft Strauss. Its color signaled the next day's forecast: green meant fair weather ahead, orange meant clouds, and flashing orange or white meant rain or snow.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Rooftop sign and thin mast
A lettered sign and a slender mast sit on the roof of the stepped tower. Print slowly, use layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm, and choose Full detail on a larger print to keep the mast.
One piece with the ground
1740 Broadway is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. 1740 Broadway takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
