About the Chrysler Building

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper in Manhattan's East Midtown, where 42nd Street meets Lexington Avenue. At 319 m (1,046 ft), it was the first supertall skyscraper built anywhere, and after it was finished in 1930 it was the tallest building in the world for 11 months. It also holds the record as the tallest brick building supported by a steel frame.

William H. Reynolds, a property developer who had been a New York State Senator, started the project, and Walter Chrysler, head of the Chrysler Corporation, commissioned it. Construction was a race against two other towers, the Empire State Building and 40 Wall Street, for the title of world's tallest. Chrysler designed and funded it personally as an investment for his children, not as headquarters for his company. William Van Alen designed the building in the Art Deco style.

Its frame is steel, filled in with masonry, parts of the exterior have decorative metal cladding, and there are 3,862 exterior windows. Roughly fifty metal ornaments protrude at the corners on five floors, reminiscent of Gothic gargoyles, and the 61st floor is decorated with eagles. Bright Nirosta stainless steel covers the crown and needle and was also used for ornaments and window frames. Above the 60th floor the structure funnels into a Maltese cross shape.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 86 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 107 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 137 mm 1:2,344

A long, thin needle
The crown ends in a slender needle. Print slowly with good cooling and 0.12–0.16 mm layers. Print friendly adapts the thinnest part to the print scale, while Full detail keeps it on a larger print.
Layered crown arches
The crown is built from stacked, overlapping arches, with small ornaments jutting out at the corners below. A larger print, or Full detail, keeps the layers distinct.
One piece with the ground
The Chrysler Building is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Chrysler Building takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Chrysler Building is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Chrysler Building STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Chrysler Building grows with the print: about 86 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
