About Algiers
Algiers sits on the Mediterranean coast in north-central Algeria, and it is the country's capital and largest city. An estimated 4.325 million people lived in its urban area in 2025. Its built-up area follows the Bay of Algiers, with mountain ranges and the Mitidja Plain around it, and it is the capital of Algiers Province. Buluggin ibn Ziri formally founded the city in 972 AD, though its history stretches back to a Phoenician trading settlement. In 1516 the Ottoman Regency of Algiers made it its capital, and it held that role until the French invasion in 1830. The modern Algerian state has had it as its capital since 1962.
The historic Casbah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with traditional Algerian, Ottoman and Andalusian architecture, and the city also has a larger French-built section in diverse styles. Whitewashed buildings earned Algiers the name al bidha, "the white." The oldest mosque in the city is Djamaa el Kebir; an inscription on its pulpit shows it existed in 1097, and the sultan of Tlemcen's minaret dates from 1324. The Ketchaoua Mosque was the cathedral of St Philippe before 1962, built in 1845 out of a mosque from 1612, and it appears to blend Moorish and Byzantine styles. Notre Dame d'Afrique, built from 1858 to 1872, mixes Roman and Byzantine styles.
