About Segovia
Segovia is the capital of the Province of Segovia and has more people than any other municipality in it. The city lies in Spain's Castile and León, on the Iberian Peninsula's Inner Plateau near the Sistema Central mountains, with housing in a bend of the Eresma river. Celts held the early settlement, and the Romans later took control. After Alfonso VI of León and Castile conquered Toledo, Segovia was resettled with Christians. Trade routes made it an important center of the wool and textile trade, and Isabella I was proclaimed Castile's queen at San Miguel de Segovia church on December 13, 1474.
Segovia is famous for its historic buildings, with three main landmarks: a Roman aqueduct, a cathedral and the Alcázar. The aqueduct, in Plaza del Azoguejo, dates to the late first or early second century AD. About 25,000 granite blocks are held together without mortar, and it is 818 meters long, with more than 170 arches; the tallest reaches 29 meters. The Alcázar, a royal palace on a stone peninsula between the Eresma and Clamores rivers, was first documented in 1122 and was built in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic and Mudéjar. The cathedral was one of the last in Europe built in a Gothic style.
