About Valencia
Valencia is both the capital and the biggest city of the Valencian Community, and of the province that shares its name. It sits beside the Turia, on the Iberian Peninsula's east coast, facing the Mediterranean Sea, and is Spain's third most populous city. The Romans founded it as a colony in 138 BC. Islamic rule in the 8th century brought new irrigation systems and crops, and in 1238 the Aragonese took the city in a Christian conquest, after which it became capital of the Kingdom of Valencia. It thrived in the 15th century and became a major silk manufacturing center in the 18th.
The historic center covers about 169 hectares (420 acres), making it one of Spain's largest. In the Barrio del Carmen, buildings from Roman and Arab times stand along winding streets. The Cathedral, with its bell tower El Miguelete, was built from the 13th to the 15th century, mainly in Valencian Gothic style with Baroque and Romanesque elements. The Silk Exchange, erected in early Valencian Gothic style, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, while the Central Market and the Estació del Nord station show Valencian Art Nouveau. Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela designed the City of Arts and Sciences.
