About Bucharest

Bucharest is Romania's capital and largest city, standing on the River Dâmbovița in the south-east of the country. The city proper has an estimated 1.71 million residents within a metropolitan area of 2.33 million, and it has six sectors, each with its own local mayor. Ilfov County surrounds it completely. The first mention of Bucharest dates from 1459, and in the 16th and 17th centuries it grew into a hub of Wallachian commerce and government. In 1862 it became capital of the Romanian United Principalities, and the founding of the Romanian Kingdom in 1881 brought a boom.

The city center blends Art Nouveau, Art Deco, neoclassical and medieval buildings, while Communist-era architecture, mostly utilitarian, covers most of the southern boroughs. Many see the interwar years as the golden age of the city's architecture. Architect Paul Louis Albert Galeron built the Romanian Athenaeum between 1886 and 1888 with public funding, and the Arcul de Triumf took its present form in 1935, patterned on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The Palace of the Parliament, which dates from the 1980s under Nicolae Ceaușescu, is the world's largest parliament building; significant portions of the historic center were demolished to make way for it.
