About Belgrade

Belgrade is Serbia's capital and its largest city. It stands where the Sava meets the Danube, at a crossroads between the Balkan Peninsula and the Pannonian Plain, and it ranks third among Danube cities by population. In the 2022 census the contiguous urban area had 1,298,661 inhabitants and the administrative area, which roughly matches the metro area, had 1,682,720. Counted among Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, it became the seat of King Stefan Dragutin of Serbia in 1284 and fell to the Ottomans in 1521. Serbia's capital again from 1841, it was also the capital of Yugoslavia. It has been fought over in 115 wars.

The oldest structures stand in Kalemegdan Park; outside it, the oldest buildings are from no earlier than the 18th century, a result of the city's position and frequent wars and destruction. In the 19th century the city changed from an oriental town to one with neoclassical, romantic and academic influences, and Serbian architects took over from foreign builders late in that century. Serbo-Byzantine Revival elements appear in the Church of Saint Sava. After World War II, housing went up quickly and cheaply, and modernist trends took over in the mid-1950s. Styles range from the Central European look of central Zemun to the modern, spacious layout of New Belgrade.
