About Budapest

Budapest is Hungary's capital and its most populous city, standing on the River Danube in the middle of the Pannonian Basin. Its population is about 1.7 million, and the wider metropolitan area, at about 3.3 million, holds roughly a third of the country's people. The area began as a Celtic settlement that the Romans turned into the town of Aquincum, which served as capital of Lower Pannonia during the 1st century. Buda, Pest and Óbuda were unified in 1873, by which time Budapest had become a co-capital of the empire of Austria-Hungary. In 1896, the city opened the first underground transit line in continental Europe.

Budapest's historic center along the Danube is a World Heritage Site, and building rules aimed at protecting the historic cityscape keep high-rises few: in the early 2010s, around 100 buildings stood higher than 45 m (148 ft). The best-known landmarks that look Gothic, the Hungarian Parliament Building and Matthias Church, are actually neo-Gothic. During the Ottoman occupation from 1541 to 1686, mosques and baths were built, and original hammams from the 16th century, such as Rudas Baths, still function. The neo-Gothic Parliament is the biggest building in Hungary, at 268 m (879 ft) long.
