About Dakar
Dakar is Senegal's capital and largest city. Its metropolitan area had 4.0 million people in 2023, and the department of Dakar has 1,278,469. The city occupies the Cap-Vert peninsula, which is mainland Africa's westernmost point. The Lebu people settled the peninsula no later than the 15th century, and the original villages of Ouakam, Ngor, Yoff and Hann make up distinctively Lebou neighborhoods. Portuguese ships arrived at the Bay of Dakar in 1444, and France took over the island of Gorée in 1677. Dakar succeeded Saint-Louis as French West Africa's capital in 1902, and it has been the capital of independent Senegal since 1960.
Colonial authorities spent heavily on infrastructure: jetties improved the port, a telegraph line followed the coast to Saint-Louis, and a railway to the same city was completed in 1885. A second railroad, the Dakar-Niger line, was built between 1906 and 1923 and connected the city with Bamako. After a plague epidemic in 1914, most Africans were forced out of the old Plateau neighborhoods into a new quarter, the Médina, behind a "sanitary cordon." The Plateau became a district for administration, commerce and housing increasingly reserved for Europeans. Since independence, the built-up area has spread eastward past Pikine to Rufisque, forming a conurbation of almost 3 million people.
