About Lisbon

Lisbon is Portugal's capital and its most populous city, with an estimated 658,236 residents in 2025 within its administrative limits. The wider metropolitan area had about 3.35 million inhabitants in 2025. The city sits on the Atlantic Ocean, in the Iberian Peninsula's western part, beside the River Tagus. Only Athens is an older European capital. Afonso Henriques conquered Lisbon in 1147, and in 1255 it replaced Coimbra as Portugal's capital. The government, the Assembly of the Republic, the Supreme Court of Justice and the head of state's residence are all there.

Some of the oldest layers of Lisbon's built landscape lie on and around Castle Hill. The first fortifications there date to no earlier than the 2nd century BC, though people of the Iron Age lived on the site between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, and a Phoenician trading post stood on the hill's southern slope, where the sheltered harbor of the Tagus estuary suited a settlement. Under Roman rule the settlement needed a wall, and during Augustus' reign the Romans built a great theater, the Cassian Baths beneath Rua da Prata, temples, a large forum and multi-storied apartment buildings. Many ruins were first unearthed in the mid-18th century.
