About Malmö

Malmö ranks third among Swedish cities, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and seventh in the Nordic region. It stands on the Öresund strait, on Sweden's southwestern coast; it is Scania's largest city, and its municipal population was 365,644 in 2024. It received city privileges in 1353 and is the seat of Skåne County government. The Öresund Bridge, finished in 2000, is Sweden's only fixed direct road and rail link to continental Europe, and the Öresund Region, which includes Copenhagen, holds four million people.

St. Peter's Church is Malmö's oldest building, raised in Baltic Brick Gothic in the early fourteenth century and probably following St Mary's Church in Lübeck; its tower fell twice in the fifteenth century and took its present form in 1890. The oldest parts of the city date from 1300 to 1600. A mid-nineteenth-century expansion produced the stone and brick city and a group of Art Nouveau buildings, the synagogue among them, and around 1965 the Million Programme sought affordable apartments on the outskirts, while much of the historic center was torn down. From 2001 the Western Harbor was rebuilt as housing, where the Turning Torso became the city's new landmark.
