About Dresden

Saxony's capital, Dresden is also its second most populous city, behind Leipzig. Only Hamburg is bigger among cities on the Elbe, and most residents live in the Elbe Valley. The earliest documentary evidence of Dresden is from 1206, and in 1547 it became capital of the Electorate of Saxony. For centuries the Electors and Kings of Saxony made it their capital and royal residence, endowing it with cultural and artistic splendor. In the last stage of World War II, American and British bombing killed approximately 25,000 people and destroyed the entire city center.

Most of Dresden's baroque landmarks went up while Elector Frederick Augustus I and then Frederick Augustus II reigned. They include the Zwinger, the Japanese Palace and Pillnitz Castle, as well as two churches: the Frauenkirche, which is Lutheran, and the Hofkirche, which is Catholic. The Frauenkirche was destroyed during World War II, its ruins stayed as a war memorial for half a century, and it was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005. Dresden is often called a Baroque city, but the Renaissance, Historicism, Modernism and Postmodernism also shaped it. Some 13,000 cultural monuments in Dresden are listed, and among its important contemporary buildings are the New Synagogue and the UFA-Kristallpalast cinema.
