About Copenhagen

Copenhagen is Denmark's capital and its most populous city. It lies mainly on the island of Zealand, with a smaller part on Amager, and the Øresund strait separates it from Malmö, Sweden; rail and road both cross the Øresund Bridge between the two cities. Vikings settled it as a fishing village in the 10th century, and it took over as Denmark's capital in the early 15th century. In the 16th century it was the Kalmar Union's de facto capital. Following World War II, the Finger Plan encouraged housing and business growth along the five urban rail routes radiating from the city center.

Copenhagen's skyline is generally horizontal, interrupted chiefly by church and castle spires and towers, and it is sometimes called "the City of Spires." The Church of Our Saviour has a Baroque spire with a narrowing external spiral stairway. The most distinctive district, Frederiksstaden, grew up under Frederick V, with Amalienborg Palace at its center, the dome of Frederik's Church and several 18th-century Rococo mansions. Børsen, on the island of Slotsholmen, is a prominent example of the Dutch Renaissance style. Residential boroughs from the late 19th century were built outside the old ramparts.
