About Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city after Berlin, with more than 1.9 million residents, and the sixth-largest in the EU. The Elbe estuary, 110 km (68 mi) long, starts in Hamburg, at the Jutland Peninsula's base, where the Alster and Bille meet. Germany has three city-states, and Hamburg is one of them, with Berlin and Bremen. Its port is the largest in Germany and the third largest in Europe, behind Rotterdam and Antwerp, and the official name, Free and Hanseatic City, reflects its past in the medieval Hanseatic League.

Its architecturally significant buildings come in a wide range of styles. Churches are important landmarks, and the skyline features their tall spires; St Nicholas' held the title of world's tallest building briefly in the 19th century. The town hall, finished in 1897, is a Neo-Renaissance building with rich decoration. The Chilehaus, built in 1922 to a design by Fritz Höger, is a brick expressionist office building whose form recalls an ocean liner. UNESCO declared the Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel World Heritage Sites in 2015. The Elbphilharmonie, which opened in January 2017, is a concert hall shaped like a sail, set on an old warehouse and designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
