About Poznań
Poznań is a city on the Warta River in western Poland, within the Greater Poland region, and it serves as the administrative capital of Greater Poland Voivodeship. Poznań is Poland's fifth-largest city, with 540,146 residents in 2023. It numbers among the historical capitals of medieval Poland, four in all, and was the ancient capital of the region. The city is a hub for trade, sports, education, technology and tourism, and it hosts the Poznań International Fair, described as the biggest industrial fair in the country and among the largest in Europe.
The Imperial District, laid out after Josef Stübben's 1903 plan and built between 1904 and 1910, groups the clearest examples of Romanesque Revival, Renaissance Revival and Neoclassical work. Its heart is the Imperial Castle, raised for Wilhelm II between 1905 and 1910 and used as a cultural center since the 1960s. Buildings from the same decade include the Grand Theater of 1910 by Max Littmann and the Collegium Minus. Postmodernism arrived in office architecture around the start of the 21st century, and Bałtyk, by MVRDV, was that firm's first project in Poland.
