About Mecca
Mecca lies in Saudi Arabia's western Hejaz region and serves as capital of Mecca Province. It is regarded as the birthplace of Islam and of the prophet Muhammad, and it is the holiest city in Islam. The city stands in a narrow valley at an elevation of 277 m (909 ft), 70 km (43 mi) inland of Jeddah. Its metropolitan population was 2.4 million in 2022, the third most populous in Saudi Arabia behind Riyadh and Jeddah, and each year pilgrims for the Hajj more than triple its population. Ibn Saud and his allies conquered Mecca in 1925, one of several regime changes.
The Masjid al-Haram, known as the Great Mosque of Mecca, is home to the Kaaba. Since the Saudi conquest of Hejaz in 1925, the city has expanded greatly in size and infrastructure. The Abraj al-Bait Complex, seven buildings on the mosque's southern side, has a central clock tower that reaches 601 m (1,972 feet). Historical structures and archaeological sites, including the Ajyad Fortress, were destroyed, with many demolitions officially tied to enlarging the Masjid al-Haram for pilgrims. The Mecca Gate, designed in 1979 by Samir Elabd, takes the form of a book representing the Quran on a bookrest.
