About Riyadh

Riyadh is Saudi Arabia's capital and largest city, and also the capital of Riyadh Province. It lies on the eastern side of Wadi Hanifa, on the Najd plateau's east, at an average of roughly 600 meters (2,000 ft) of elevation, and is the Arabian Peninsula's largest city. It had 7 million residents in 2022. The earliest known mention of the name Riyadh concerns the year 1590. The name means "gardens" and refers to oasis towns that a single wall later enclosed. In September 1932 Ibn Saud gave his kingdom the name Saudi Arabia and made Riyadh its capital.

Little remains of the old walled town, which covered no more than 1 km². The Al-Masmak Palace is its most prominent remnant, along with restored sections of the wall and its gate. King Abdulaziz's Murabba Palace, built in 1936 and finished in 1938, was the first major construction outside the walls. The walls came down in the 1950s, and the city grew outward as an extension of the old walled town. Highway 65, or King Fahd Road, passes the King Abdullah Financial District, Al-Faisaliah Tower and Kingdom Center.
