About Jerusalem

Jerusalem lies on a plateau of the Judaean Mountains in the Southern Levant, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea. It is among the world's oldest cities and holds a holy status for Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Israel and Palestine both claim it as their capital, and neither claim is widely recognized internationally. Traces of settlement in the part called the City of David reach back to the 4th millennium BCE, and over its long history the city has been destroyed at least twice and besieged 23 times. In 2024 its population was 1,050,153.

The walls that define the Old City were rebuilt for a last time in 1538, during Ottoman rule under Suleiman the Magnificent. Since the 19th century it has been split into four quarters: Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim. It gained World Heritage Site status in 1981, and Jerusalem has grown far beyond those walls since 1860. The Old City covers only 0.9 square kilometers, yet it holds many sites of major religious importance, among them the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound.
