About Manama
Manama is Bahrain's capital and largest city. It sits on Bahrain Island's low-lying northeastern coast, facing the Persian Gulf, and has long been an important trading center there. Islamic texts mention it as early as the 14th century, and it stayed a small trading port until the Portuguese took control in the early 1500s. After the Safavid Persians expelled the Portuguese in 1602, Manama grew into a regional hub of trade and pearling. Muharraq was the capital until 1923, while Manama became the mercantile capital. Bahrain became independent in 1971.
The Portuguese raised Bahrain Fort at the edge of Manama, and after 1736 Nader Shah built a fort at its southern edge, likely the Diwan Fort. When the English scholar William Gifford Palgrave visited in 1862, he found a few ruined stone buildings among the huts of fishermen and pearl-divers. Oil wealth in the 20th century spurred fast growth, and a diversification effort in the 1990s helped make Manama a financial hub. Reclaimed land has extended its coastline, and building has followed the coast, adding infrastructure, financial districts and homes that reach into the desert outskirts and onto offshore artificial islands.
