About Luxor
In Upper Egypt, Luxor serves as the capital of the Luxor Governorate, about 670 km from Cairo and about 220 km north of Aswan. In 2023 it had a population of 284,952. The city was once Thebes, and it served as one of Ancient Egypt's capitals. It is counted among the world's oldest cities with continuous habitation. Its importance began as early as the 11th Dynasty under Montuhotep II. Between the 18th and 20th Dynasties, Thebes rose to be Ancient Egypt's political, religious and military capital, and it stayed the religious capital until the Greek period.
Inside the city stand the ruins of the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes of Egypt. Across the River Nile lies the West Bank Theban Necropolis, a group of monuments, temples and tombs that includes the Valley of the Kings as well as the Valley of the Queens. Amun's great temple at Karnak was the most important temple in Egypt until the end of antiquity. Christian monks later built monasteries among the ancient monuments, one of them the temple of Hatshepsut, called Deir el-Bahri. The Avenue of Sphinxes, 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) long, linked the Luxor and Karnak temples.
