About Doha

Doha is Qatar's capital, its biggest city and its main financial hub. It faces the Persian Gulf on the country's eastern coast, with Al Wakrah to its south and Al Khor and Lusail to its north. More than 80% of Qatar's people live in Doha or its suburbs, known together as the Doha Metropolitan Area. Doha dates to the 1820s, when it began as an offshoot of Al Bidda, and it became the capital in 1971, the year Qatar ended its time as a British protectorate. The metropolitan area includes Education City, devoted to research and education, and Doha Sports City, also called Aspire Zone.

Traditional buildings in Doha used locally quarried limestone for walls 0.4 to 0.6 m (1 ft 4 in to 2 ft) thick, built as two rows of large facing stones around a core of mud, gravel and small stones. In the 1950s builders turned to concrete blocks with shell inclusions, later replaced by plain concrete blocks and reinforced concrete. Many older structures from the 1960s and 1970s in Old Doha were demolished, and Katara Cultural Village was launched to protect the country's cultural identity. Msheireb Downtown Doha covers 31 hectares and was estimated to cost $5bn; when launched, it was described as the biggest city-center redevelopment of its kind.
