About Nukuʻalofa
Nukuʻalofa, Tonga's capital and largest city, lies on the northern shore of Tongatapu, an island in the southernmost island group of the country. On June 10, 1777, James Cook described anchoring in its bay, and he drew the first map of it. The first written record of Nukuʻalofa appeared in George Vason's book of 1810. The arrival of Methodist missionaries in 1827 reinforced the Christian faith, and the settlement grew into Tonga's main center of Christianity. The Constitution of Tonga, issued in Nukuʻalofa on November 4, 1875, formalized it as the capital, and the national government is based there.
Nukuʻalofa was reorganized into three districts. Kolomotuʻa, the old settlement, covers the original site of the old fort. Kolofoʻou, meaning new town, runs east from Vahaʻakolo Road to Maʻufanga and holds the seat of government as well as the palace of Tonga's King George Taufaʻahau Tupou I. Maʻufanga lies on the eastern side, facing Pangaimotu, where Cook anchored. Riots in 2006 burned down much of the central business district. On February 12 and 13, 2018, Cyclone Gita destroyed the Tongan Parliament House, and Parliament moved to the Tongan National Centre, to the south of the city center, 4 km (2.5 mi) away.
