About Sydney

Sydney is New South Wales's capital and Australia's largest city. The metropolis wraps around Sydney Harbour, with the Pacific Ocean on its eastern side and the Blue Mountains on its western side, about 80 kilometers (50 mi) apart. Greater Sydney has 658 suburbs in 33 local government areas, and an estimate for June 2025 put the population at 5,638,830, roughly 66% of the population of the state. Arthur Phillip led the First Fleet of convicts that founded Sydney in 1788 as a British penal colony, Australia's first European settlement.

Governor Macquarie set ambitious design targets for new building projects, and in 1814 he turned to Francis Greenway, a convict, to design Macquarie Lighthouse. Greenway later designed St James's Church, in Georgian style, in 1824. Gothic-inspired designs gained popularity from the 1830s, and George McRae designed the Queen Victoria Building in Romanesque Revival fashion; it was completed in 1898. Buildings grew taller after Federation in 1901, and high-rise construction surged when height restrictions were lifted in the 1960s. The Harbour Bridge's steel arch, designed by John Bradfield, was completed in 1932. Jørn Utzon won the 2003 Pritzker Prize for his Opera House work.
