About Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand's capital, on the southwestern end of the North Island, with Cook Strait on one side and the Remutaka Range on the other. It ranks third in size among the country's cities and is the administrative center of the Wellington Region. The city is the southernmost capital of a sovereign state in the world, and also the windiest city by average wind speed. It has been the capital since 1865. The urban area had 209,800 residents in 2025, and the wider metropolitan area, which takes in Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt, had 433,900. Captain William Mein Smith drew up the city's layout in 1840.

Wellington's architecture spans about 150 years, from wooden cottages of the 19th century, among them the Italianate Katherine Mansfield Birthplace, to streamlined Art Deco buildings and the curves and bright colors of post-modern design in the CBD. The 1858 Nairn Street Cottage is the oldest building. The tallest building, on Willis Street, reaches 116 meters, and the structural expressionist Aon Centre, at 103 meters, is second. The Executive Wing of Parliament, known as the Beehive, was built between 1969 and 1981. Across the road, part of the old Government Buildings is the biggest wooden building in the Southern Hemisphere.
