About Pretoria

Pretoria serves as South Africa's executive capital and the seat of its executive branch of government. It straddles the Apies River, and its western edge climbs into the Magaliesberg foothills; it sits about 56 km (35 mi) to the north-northeast of Johannesburg, at roughly 1,339 m (4,393 ft). The city is the core of the Tshwane metropolitan municipality and is known as an academic and research center, home to the University of Pretoria, the University of South Africa and the Tshwane University of Technology. It hosts 134 foreign embassies and high commissions, a concentration of diplomatic missions second only to Washington, D.C.

The city's buildings record a wide range of influences, from nineteenth-century Dutch, German and British colonial work to postmodern and neomodern designs and Art Deco, with a manner particular to South Africa. The Palace of Justice dates from the late nineteenth century, the Union Buildings from the early twentieth, and the Voortrekker Monument from the post-war years. The President's House, Mahlamba Ndlopfu, is in the Cape Dutch style, and the Old Synagogue is Neo-Byzantine. Somewhere between 60,000 and 70,000 jacarandas line the streets and parks, the source of the city's nickname.
