About Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng province and South Africa's largest city, lying on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand. It has long been central to international trade in minerals and gold. It was established in 1886 after gold was found on what had been farmland, and within a decade its population passed 100,000. It is the seat of the Constitutional Court, though it is not the country's official judicial capital. Africa's wealthiest city by GDP and private wealth, it acts as South Africa's economic capital and hosts the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Its population in 2022 was 4,803,262.

The skyline carries most of the continent's tallest buildings, among them the Carlton Centre, Ponte City Apartments and the Hillbrow Tower. The central business district covers 6 square kilometers (2 sq mi). Four styles prevail there: Victorian Colonial, Edwardian Baroque, Modernism and Art Deco. The city center keeps a rectangular grid first recorded in 1886, and many older buildings have been replaced by newer ones. Hillbrow, north of downtown, is southern Africa's most densely populated residential area. The Beaux-Arts style set by the British Empire appears in the Art Gallery and the Supreme Court Building; the ESKOM Building and Corner House echo New York City.
