About the Solow Building

The Solow Building rises in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and its other name is 9 West 57th Street. The tower sits between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, just south of Central Park, with the Plaza Hotel nearby to the north. Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed it, and the developer, Sheldon Solow, named it after himself. Construction started in 1969 and the building was completed in 1974. It stands 689 feet (210 m) tall and has 50 stories. Avon Products leased a third of the space and became its major tenant.

The north and south sides bow inward from the ground up to the 18th floor, above which the tower climbs to the 50th story, and at the 18th floor it is 64 feet (20 m) narrower than at ground level. Gray-tinted glass covers the north and south walls, and travertine clads the west and east sides, where narrow window openings are crossed by diagonal steel bracing. It was the first major New York City structure developed with a sloped facade.

A travertine plaza extends along both 57th and 58th Streets. On the 57th Street side stands a red sculpture shaped like the numeral 9, designed by Ivan Chermayeff, which weighs 6 short tons and is roughly 10 feet (3.0 m) tall and 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. The 58th Street side holds Moonbird, a bronze sculpture by Joan Miró that stands 14 feet (4.3 m) high and was installed in 1994.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 57 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 71 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 91 mm 1:2,344

Diagonal bracing on the sides
Thin diagonal bracing crosses the east and west faces. Print friendly adapts these slim members to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Fine facade lines
Fine horizontal and vertical lines mark the glass faces. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps them. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm help keep them crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Solow Building is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Solow Building takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Solow Building is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Solow Building STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Solow Building grows with the print: about 57 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
