About Cologne
Cologne is Germany's fourth-most populous city and the biggest in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city proper has over 1.0 million inhabitants, while the Cologne Bonn urban region holds over 3.1 million. The city lies on the Rhine, with its center on the left bank, about 35 kilometers (22 mi) southeast of Düsseldorf and 22 kilometers (14 mi) northwest of Bonn, West Germany's former capital. The city dates to the 1st century AD, when it was founded as the Roman Colonia Agrippina, the origin of its name. In the Middle Ages it was a free imperial city within the Holy Roman Empire, and it was a major Hanseatic League member.
Cologne Cathedral, a medieval building, was the world's tallest building between 1880 and 1890 and was built to hold the Shrine of the Three Kings. The Twelve Romanesque churches also shape the cityscape. Cologne ranked among the German cities most heavily bombed in World War II, and around 80% of its old center was destroyed. Rebuilding used the architectural style of the 1950s but kept the old street layout and street names, so the center is mostly modern architecture with a few pre-war buildings that were reconstructed for their historical importance. About 25% of the city dates from before 1945.
