About Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung is a special municipality in southern Taiwan, home to about 2.7 million people, the third most populous city in Taiwan and the largest in the south. A merger with Kaohsiung County in 2010 stretched it from its coastal urban core through inland rural land to the mountainous Yushan Range, which makes it the biggest city in Taiwan by area, with 2,952 km². The settlement started in the 17th century as a modest trading village, Tancoia, and developed into southern Taiwan's economic center, with manufacturing, steelmaking, oil refining, freight and shipbuilding. Over 67% of the country's container imports and exports move through its port.

Prehistoric finds suggest that Kaohsiung Harbor began as a lagoon, and under the Dutch a broad shallow bay served small vessels until constant silting reshaped the coast. The Qing first opened the town as a port in the 1680s. Older sites include the Former British Consulate at Takao, from the late 19th century, the Old City of Zuoying, dating from the early 17th century, and sugar and crop factories dating from Japanese rule. Newer public works, including the Kaohsiung Music Center and the Pier-2 Art Center, are meant to boost tourism and culture, and the 85 Sky Tower is among the main landmarks.
