About Taipei

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan and a special municipality in the northern part of the island. It is an enclave of New Taipei City, about 25 kilometers (16 mi) southwest of the port city of Keelung, and mostly occupies the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed. Along the western border, the Keelung and Xindian rivers merge into the Tamsui River. The municipality had an estimated 2,494,813 residents in March 2023 and anchors Greater Taipei, home to 7,047,559 people. Since 1949 it has housed the national government of the ROC, and it serves as Taiwan's center of economy, politics, education and culture.

In the late 19th century, booming overseas trade in tea raised Taipei's importance, and in 1875 a new prefectural capital was set up there, with government buildings erected in it. Japan acquired the island in 1895 and kept Taipei as capital. Its rulers carried out advanced urban planning, including extensive railroad links, and much of the city's architecture dates from that period. The Presidential Office Building, for example, was originally the office of Taiwan's Governor-General. Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building, is among the municipality's architectural and cultural landmarks.
