About Nanjing

Nanjing, in China, is the capital of Jiangsu province and lies in its southwest. It has 11 districts, an area of 6,600 square kilometers (2,500 sq mi) under its administration, and a place in the Yangtze River Delta; its inland port is among the world's largest. Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments used it as their capital from the 3rd century to 1949. Its name, meaning "Southern Capital," was formally established in 1368, when the Ming dynasty began and the Hongwu Emperor named his capital to set it apart from Kaifeng, the "Northern Capital." It became the capital of Jiangsu province in 1952.

The city is known for varied architecture, including buildings from several dynasties, the Republic of China era and recent times. Sun Quan relocated his headquarters to Moling in 211 and built the Stone City by fortifying Shitou Hill the following year. After proclaiming himself emperor in 229, he made it his capital and built the Taichu Palace, joined in 267 by the larger Zhaoming Palace. Both were largely destroyed in the Western Jin conquest and the early 4th-century conflicts that followed. After the Su Jun Rebellion destroyed the imperial palaces, reconstruction followed from 330 to 332. Heritage sites include the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum.
