About Guangzhou

Guangzhou, also called Canton, serves as the capital of Guangdong in southern China and is its largest city. It stands on the Pearl River, about 145 kilometers (90 mi) north of Macau and 120 kilometers (75 mi) northwest of Hong Kong. The city's history spans more than 2,200 years, and it served as a major terminus on the Silk Road. Its administrative area had 18,676,605 registered residents at the 2020 census. Guangzhou lies at the heart of a Greater Bay Area linking Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, whose urban agglomeration holds about 70 million residents, and the city holds subprovincial status.

Guangzhou began as Panyu, set up in 214 BC on the Pearl River's eastern bank, and in 204 BC General Zhao Tuo made it the capital of the kingdom of Nanyue. Archaeologists found Panyu to be a large commercial center, with remains from central China, Southeast Asia, India and even Africa. The city took its present name from Guang Prefecture, whose seat it became in AD 226, and over a long period it was the one Chinese port Europeans could reach.
