About Kharkiv
Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city, in the northeast of the country, and the biggest city in the historic region of Sloboda Ukraine. It is the seat of government for Kharkiv Oblast and for Kharkiv Raion. It began in 1654 as a Cossack fortress, grew within the Russian Empire into a major commercial and industrial center, and between December 1919 and January 1934 it held capital status for the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Its leading industries have been machinery, electronics and military hardware.
Kharkiv is known for its churches and for buildings in Art Nouveau and constructivist styles. The Dormition Cathedral is Baroque, from the seventeenth century, and was rebuilt in the eighteenth and nineteenth; the Intercession Cathedral is also Baroque, and the Annunciation Cathedral is Neo-Byzantine, of 1887–1901. The puppet theater, once the Volga-Kama Commercial Bank, is Art Nouveau, the Central Market Hall dates from 1912–1914, and Derzhprom went up between 1925 and 1928 as constructivist work. Later work runs from a socialist-realist railway station of 1952 to a brutalist opera house of 1970–1990.
