About Reykjavik

Reykjavík is Iceland's capital and largest city, on the southern shore of Faxaflói bay in the southwest of the country. At a latitude of 64°08′ N, no other capital of a sovereign state lies farther north. About 140,000 people live in the city in 2026, and the surrounding Capital Region holds around 252,000, roughly 64% of the country's population. Landnámabók says that Iceland's settlement started here with the arrival of Ingólfur Arnarson from Norway in 874. The name derives from Old Norse words for smoke and bay, said to refer to steam rising from hot springs. Reykjavík was officially founded as a trading town in 1786.

Farmland covered the area of the modern city center until the 18th century. King Frederik V of Denmark gave the Reykjavík estate to the Innréttingar corporation in 1752, and several houses went up in the 1750s for the wool industry, which was the city's biggest employer for some decades. During World War II the British built Reykjavík Airport, and in the post-war years a village that had been primitive grew quickly into a modern city, with apartment complexes rising in the expanding suburbs. Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland, and Perlan is a glass dome set on six water tanks.
