About Durham
Durham, a cathedral city and civil parish of County Durham in England, serves as the county town and holds Durham County Council's headquarters. The River Wear loops around the center on three sides, and the land around it is hilly except along the flood plain. Anglo-Saxon monks founded the settlement in 995, searching for safety from Viking raids where they could keep the relics of St Cuthbert. Its prince bishops governed a semi-independent County Palatine from the 1070s until 1836, a territory that served as a buffer between England and Scotland. Durham University, founded in 1832, lays claim to being England's third-oldest university.
The present Durham Cathedral was started in 1093 and is counted among the finest Romanesque cathedrals in Europe; the rib vaulting in its nave marks the start of Gothic church architecture. Together with the castle opposite it across Palace Green, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The center is a conservation area, and the city has 569 listed buildings inside it out of more than 630 in all, among them St Oswald's and St Margaret of Antioch. The castle was started after William I saw the strength of the site in 1070, and its Norman keep is the only one in the country never to have been breached.
