About Belfast
Belfast is Northern Ireland's capital, its most populous city and its main port. It sits beside the river Lagan and reaches the open sea via Belfast Lough and the North Channel. Its 2021 population was recorded as 345,418, with 704,406 in the greater metropolitan area, making Belfast the second-largest city on the island of Ireland after Dublin. English settlement status came with a 1613 charter. Belfast became a city in 1888, when it was the world's largest center of linen manufacture. In the 1900s its shipyards accounted for as much as a quarter of the United Kingdom's shipbuilding tonnage.
The settlement grew at a ford on the Lagan, and the Normans built a fort there in the early 13th century that became the original Belfast Castle. Sir Arthur Chichester built a new castle in 1613, in the area of Castle Place. Trade profits from the 1760s paid for new docks and quays, the White Linen Hall, and the Lagan Canal. Investment tied to Northern Ireland's peace since the 1990s has helped drive a major redevelopment of the city center: the Cathedral Quarter, Victoria Square, Laganside with the Waterfront Hall, and the Titanic Quarter, where Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction.
