About Wrocław

Wrocław, in the southwest of Poland, serves as capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Silesia and Lower Silesia count it as their largest city and historical capital. It stands on the banks of the Oder in the Silesian Lowlands, with 672,545 residents in 2025, which makes it Poland's third-largest city. Its history runs back more than 1,000 years: an early medieval settlement under the Piast dynasty grew into a regional center, passed to the Bohemian Crown in the 14th century, came under Austrian and Prussian rule, and joined Poland in 1945 after World War II.

Its buildings range from Brick Gothic and Renaissance work to Baroque, Historicist and Modernist designs. The market square is among Europe's largest, and the town hall is the oldest preserved in Poland. The Centennial Hall, designed by Max Berg from 1911 to 1913, entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2006. More than 800 small bronze dwarfs, first placed in 2005, stand on sidewalks, walls and lampposts, and the city's sights also take in Cathedral Island, the Bridge of Love, the Wrocław Opera and the National Museum.
