About Belo Horizonte
With around 2.4 million residents, Belo Horizonte ranks sixth among Brazilian cities by size. It is the capital of Minas Gerais, the second most populous state in Brazil, and it anchors a metropolitan area of 6 million, the third largest in the country. Settlement of the region began early in the 18th century, but the city itself was planned and built in the 1890s, replacing Ouro Preto as capital of Minas Gerais. It is Brazil's first planned modern city. Several hills carry the city, and mountains ring it on all sides.
Aarão Reis and Francisco Bicalho looked to Washington, D.C.'s urban planning for inspiration, and the city mixes contemporary and classical buildings. The Palácio da Liberdade, one of the buildings around Praça da Liberdade, was the first one finished during the planned development of the late 1890s. Mayor Juscelino Kubitschek led work in the Pampulha district, where architects and artists including Oscar Niemeyer, Burle Marx and Candido Portinari began a modern architecture and art that was greatly developed later in Brasília. Pampulha includes the Mineirão stadium, among the world's largest soccer stadiums. Niemeyer also designed the São Francisco de Assis Church there.
