About Manaus

Manaus, the largest city and capital of Brazil's state of Amazonas, ranks seventh among Brazilian cities, with an estimated 2,279,686 residents in 2024. It lies within the Amazon rainforest, close to where the Negro and Amazon rivers meet. The settlement began in 1669 as a fort named São José do Rio Negro. In 1832 it became a town named Manaus, a changed spelling of the indigenous Manaós, and on October 24, 1848 it was made a city. The National Institute of Amazonian Research is based there, and the economy is driven by the Industrial Park of Manaus, which operates as a Free Economic Zone.

Rubber made Manaus the richest city in South America in the late 1800s, and wealthy European families who settled there brought their taste for European art, architecture, and culture. The city paid for a lavish opera house, the Teatro Amazonas, featuring vast domes and gilded balconies and built from marble, glass, and crystal brought from across Europe. It sat mostly shut through the 20th century and reopened for live opera in 1997. The boom gave Manaus electricity before many European cities had it. Founded in 1882, the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa copies the Les Halles market of Paris, and the Justice Palace stands beside the opera house.
