About Brasília

Brasília is the capital of Brazil and of the Federal District. It lies in the Brazilian Highlands in the Central-West region, and President Juscelino Kubitschek founded it on April 21, 1960, as the new national capital in place of Rio de Janeiro. Only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are more populous, and Brasília has 2.8 million residents. All three branches of the federal government are located there. Its legal status is unusual, being an administrative region instead of a municipality, and the Federal District is split into 35 such regions, among them Plano Piloto, which covers the originally planned city.

Joaquim Cardozo, Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa developed the planned city from 1956, with Roberto Burle Marx as landscape architect. Its layout takes the shape of an airplane: the "fuselage" is the Monumental Axis, two wide avenues beside a large park, and Praça dos Três Poderes sits in the "cockpit". The plan divides the city into numbered blocks and sectors for specific activities, such as hotels, banking, commerce and embassies. Niemeyer and Cardozo created the buildings on the Praça dos Três Poderes in a modern Brazilian style. UNESCO inscribed Brasília as a World Heritage Site in 1987 for its modernist architecture and artistic urban planning.
