About Chicago

Illinois's most populous city, and the most populous in the Midwestern United States, Chicago stands along the western shore of Lake Michigan and had 2.74 million residents at the 2020 census. It was incorporated in 1837, near a portage linking the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River watershed. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 wiped out several square miles and left over 100,000 people without homes. The city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry and transportation, and O'Hare International Airport routinely places among the ten busiest airports in the world by passenger traffic.

After the Great Chicago Fire, the city saw the largest building boom in the nation's history. In 1885 the Home Insurance Building, the first steel-framed high-rise, rose in Chicago, which ushered in the skyscraper era. The Chicago School and the Prairie School, two architectural movements, are tied to the city. Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan and Helmut Jahn are among the architects who shaped the skyline. Oak Park resident Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Robie House near the University of Chicago. Brick bungalows put up between the early 20th century and the end of World War II characterize large parts of the residential areas away from the lake.
