About Los Angeles
Los Angeles is the most populous city in California and the cultural, commercial and financial center of Southern California. Most of it lies in the Los Angeles Basin beside the Pacific Ocean and reaches the San Fernando Valley to the north. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County. It was founded on the village of Yaanga on September 4, 1781, under the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It passed to the United States in 1848 and was incorporated on April 4, 1850. Oil found in the 1890s brought rapid growth, and the Los Angeles Aqueduct, completed in 1913, delivers water from Eastern California.
The architecture of Los Angeles draws on its Spanish, Mexican and American roots, and popular styles include Spanish Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern. Pueblo Plaza and Olvera Street form a historic district that is the oldest part of the city. Southern Pacific's line from San Francisco arrived in 1876, with the Santa Fe Railroad following in 1885. Many neighborhoods developed piecemeal, and some were separately incorporated cities that later merged with Los Angeles. The Summer Olympics took place in the city in 1932 and again in 1984.
