About Mesa

Mesa, in Maricopa County, Arizona, had 504,258 residents at the 2020 census. It ranks third in population among Arizona cities, behind Phoenix and Tucson, and has more people than any other city in the Phoenix area's East Valley. Tempe lies to its west, Apache Junction to its east, and Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek to its south. The city sits in the Sonoran Desert and has a hot desert climate. Ten or more colleges and universities have been based in Mesa, and Mesa Gateway Airport, in the city's southeastern corner, serves as the Phoenix area's largest relief airport.

Mesa's history goes back some 2,000 years or more, starting with the Hohokam, who built canals that were the largest and most sophisticated anywhere in the prehistoric New World; by 1100 CE they could water more than 450 km² (110,000 acres). Mesa City became a registered townsite of 2.6 km² (one square mile) on July 17, 1878, and it was incorporated in 1883. Center Street, running north to south, divides the city into eastern and western halves and is the origin point for east and west street numbers. The Mesa Arizona Temple was among the first Mormon temples built outside Utah.
